NYC CB8's Landmarks Committee Votes 7-0 to Support 93rd Street Beautification Association's Request to Landmark Marx Brothers Place in Carnegie Hill

On July 19, 2010, New York City Community Board 8's (CB8) Landmarks Committee voted 7-0 (with one abstention) to support the 93rd Street Beautification Association's Request for Evaluation (RFE) asking the city to extend the Carnegie Hill Historic District (CHHD) one block east so as to include the incomparable collection of historic structures on East 93rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenues.

As these elegant antiques - evoking the city's architectural and cultural history - remain vulnerable to demolition on a daily basis, the overwhelming support registered by the CB8 Landmarks Committee vote brought a huge sigh of relief to the block; its fans and residents.

Historic East 93rd Street is popularly known as Marx Brothers Place - a name coined by famed preservationist Tony Wood - because the block includes the beloved childhood home of the Marx Brothers in addition to brownstones older than any that are already in the CHHD while boasting a steeped-down roofscape unique to the steep topography of this little stretch of the Carnegie Hill.
